Areas where sanitation, PPE and other vital resources to battle COVID-19 are very scarce. With schools having been shut for up to five months, it is fundamental that efforts are scaled up to support children back into learning, be it remotely or through supporting schools to become COVID-safe environments, to prevent education drop-out. Without access to the safe space that schools provide, children are also increasingly vulnerable and facing heightened protection risks, and, as such, Street Child\u2019s protection work is now more necessary than ever, with our teams working hard to implement innovative, remote approaches to provide children with much-needed services. Additionally, economic recovery is central to empowering communities and safeguarding their futures, and Street Child has thus escalated its efforts to support the livelihoods of the vulnerable people it serves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Afghanistan<\/strong><br \/>\nStreet Child\u2019s COVID-19 protection response continued to expand across Balkh, Badakhshan, Herat and Kunduz provinces, with interventions including psychosocial support services, case management services for unaccompanied and separated children, and specialised services such as interim care and family tracing and reunification for children at severe risk of exposure to exploitation and violence. The charity also continued to provide protection services in the Balkh and Kabul prisons and pivoted to providing remote learning for 3,500 children in Uruzgan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cameroon<\/strong><br \/>\nIn collaboration with its local partners, Street Child is continuing to grow and diversify its response work to reflect the need as restrictions are lifted. With schools reopening to allow students to sit exams, the charity distributed COVID-19 kits including thermometers, soap, handwashing stations, face masks and hand sanitiser to 30 densely populated schools to ensure the safety of their pupils. Street Child also supported 22 women with training and basic income-generating starter packs to combat the economic impact COVID-19 has had on their livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Democratic Republic of the Congo<\/strong><br \/>\nEbenezer Ministry International (EMI), Street Child\u2019s core partner in DRC, supported 648 children by distributing government-designed paper-based learning booklets to support the content being taught by teachers in small group teaching sessions. Efforts to break the chain of COVID-19 transmission also continued, with 30 handwashing stations being installed and 2,000 posters with key prevention information being distributed in areas affected by the Uvira floods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Around the globe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-10\"><strong>In Haiti<\/strong>, Lumenis is supporting the efforts of the St. Luke Foundation for Haiti and Dr. Mitchell Humphreys of the Mayo Clinic to provide relief and prevent potentially life-threatening complications in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) patients using the\u00a0VersaPulse PowerSuite\u00a0family of Holmium and Dual Wavelength lasers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-10\"><strong>In Russia<\/strong>, China and Vietnam, Lumenis worked with acclaimed Dr. Rox Anderson \u00a0of Harvard Medical School to treat children suffering from burn injuries. Children at the Pediatric Hospital No. 9 in Moscow were treated using Lumenis\u2019\u00a0<a href=\" \/aesthetics\/products\/ultrapulse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UltraPulse SCAAR FX<\/a>\u00a0CO<sub>2<\/sub> laser. \u00a0Lumenis donated the laser system to the hospital and Dr. Anderson trained the local doctors so that more children could be helped in the future. \u00a0Similar missions with Dr. Anderson were carried out in China and Vietnam where over 300 children were healed.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lumenis.com\/aesthetics\/events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-10\"><strong>In St. Lucia<\/strong>, where glaucoma affects nearly 9% of the population over the age of 30, Lumenis worked with Dr. Tony Realini of West Virginia University to help reduce preventable blindness using the\u00a0Selecta II SLT laser. \u00a0Lumenis has also collaborated with the Wills Eye Institute to provide SLT procedures to undeserved patients in Philadelphia.<br \/>\nIn the United States and Israel, the Lumenis HOPE campaign is helping wounded soldiers gain access to advanced burn treatment with the\u00a0<a href=\" \/aesthetics\/products\/ultrapulse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UltraPulse SCAAR FX<\/a>\u00a0CO<sub>2<\/sub> laser. \u00a0The Company is committed to doing its part to ensure that Veterans wounded in battle receive the best medical care possible, regardless of their ability to pay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-10\"><strong>In India,\u00a0<\/strong>Lumenis and Aravind Eye Care System, a social organisation committed to the goal of elimination of needless blindness, are collaborating to evaluate the effect of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, a painless laser application, in minimizing glaucoma progression in India.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-10\"><strong>In Africa,<\/strong>\u00a0Lumenis has collaborated with Right-to-Sight &#8211; a non-profit organization registered at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, to Join fight to eliminate preventable blindness in Africa. \u00a0&#8220;Glaucoma is responsible for up to 20% of the preventable blindness cases in Africa, yet there is less than one ophthalmic surgeon per one million inhabitants across the continent,\u201d said Dr. Kate Coleman, ophthalmic surgeon and founder of Right-to-Sight. &#8220;Furthermore, standard medical treatments such as prostaglandin-analogues are largely unavailable, difficult to store at correct temperatures, and often cost more than a local monthly wage. Right to Sight, together with Lumenis, believes that glaucoma in Africa must be addressed as a matter of urgency in view of the recent statistics from the IOVS survey, and in order to alleviate the plight of the millions of individuals in Africa who unnecessarily lose their eyesight to glaucoma,\u201d added Dr. Coleman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mt-10\"><strong>In Armenia<\/strong>, Lumenis supported a successful mission to treat children with burn injuries.\u00a0 The mission, led by R. Rox Anderson, MD, Director of the Wellman Center for Photomedicine and Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School, was designed to provide immediate access to treatment for patients in need, but also to help local medical leaders establish a sustainable burn injury care network in Armenia.<br \/>\nThe Lumenis\u00a0<a href=\"\/aesthetics\/products\/ultrapulse\/\">UltraPulse\u00ae<\/a>, the most powerful CO<sub>2<\/sub> laser system for scar evision procedures, with the unique SCAARFX mode, was used in the mission.
